If you need to leave your home quickly due to rapidly spreading wildfires or other calamity, are you prepared?
One of the best things to do is to prepare a bug-out-bag.
Mine is not perfect and I’m constantly adding to and subtracting from it. In my inventory I try to satisfy requirements for water, food, shelter and safety.
Pro Tips: • Almost all of the winners of the survival show Alone took with them a multi-tool, a portable saw, axe, ferro rod and cooking pot with lid |
This is what’s currently in my 65L backpack:
- List of inventory
- Some cash in small denominations and silver coins
- Sawyer water filter
- Grayl water bottle
- Food for four days for one person
- Cellphone with Survivalist.ai offline AI assistant loaded on it and solar powered cellphone battery pack
- Leatherman multi-tool
- Portable saw
- 3x socks and underwear
- Keeping feet clean is essential. Trench foot and jungle rot can develop quickly when feet are wet.
- 2x heavy duty trash bags
- Cooking
- JetBoil stove and utensil like a spork
- Pot with lid
- Firestarter
- Both bic lighters and flint stick
- Dental kit, floss, toothpaste
- First aid kit
- Also added liquid skin, clotting agent, trauma wound dressing, tylenol, aspirin
- Personal hygiene materials
- Toilet paper, wet wipes
- Insect repellent with DEET
Survival seeds- Emergency thermal blanket
- 550 paracord
- Glosticks
- Compass and map of nearby areas
- Coffee, sugar, creamer
- Superglue
- Hand cranked emergency radio
- Flashlight and headlamp
- 8x AA batteries
Notable omissions are a weapon for hunting and self-defense, lightweight down jacket, rain gear or poncho, tent, sleeping bag. My current bag is bursting at the seams so I might prepare another bag for these items.
I probably don’t need survival seeds as those are a long-term measure.
Keep your passport, ID and wallet easy to get to.
